- Three reasons come to mind:

- 1. Internal modems do not have any indication of operation. If you
- are having trouble, even blinking lights are better than nothing.
- With some experience, the lights can help solve many problems.

- multiple 28.8k modems. An external modem is easily move from one
- computer to the other.
